Intersectionality

Human rights do not exist inside a vacuum and discrimination may be experienced based on more than one protected ground under the Alberta Human Rights Act or the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. For example, one may experience discrimination based on race or ethnic orgin as well as based on their religious beliefs and their gender all at once. Intersectionality refers to the way that different identities, such as race, religion, gender, and sexual orientation, all intersect with one another.

This section provides information on the various identities that are protected against discrimination, including race, gender, and sexual orientation.
