Podcasts and Videos
An element of anti-racism learning involves listening to the lived experiences of racialized individuals. Hearing from those who have experienced either direct racism and those who have faced systemic racism strengthens the understanding of the diverse ways in which racism affects people and institutions. This section provides links to podcasts and videos which offer shared experiences of Black, Indigenous and people of colour, as well as other information on anti-racism learning.
The podcast/video Anti-Racism in the time of Covid-19 provides listeners/viewers with an outline of the legal principles and human rights legislation involved when discussing racism and racial discrimination, with a particular focus on the Covid-19 pandemic. The podcast/video also provides listeners with examples of institutional racism in Canadian history and definitions of key terms such as culture, racial discrimination, liberal racism, and xenophobia. Listeners are also provided examples of exclusionary practices that take place, which have been highlighted by the Covid-19 pandemic. Listeners are provided with tools and strategies to speak out against racism and racial discrimination as well as ways to support others.
The video Respectful Me, Respectful You provides viewers with an understanding of bullying, and harassment and includes examples of race based discrimination. Viewers are provided with examples of a variety of behaviours and each scenario is followed up with a discussion of the legal implications of each action.
The video Students for Change outlines the Students for Change initiative where students and teachers are guided through discussions of human rights and are tasked with coming up with examples of bullying, harassment and discrimination that students have seen or participated in. The video is accompanied by a user guide for further understanding.
